BeatDetektor makes use of your iPhone's microphone to detect and visualize the BPM (Beats Per Minute) of music - no screen tapping or shaking is required! BeatDetektor works best with Dance and Electronic music but has been found to also work with a wide variety of other genres. Tapping on a desk or making other steady sounds will work just as well.
The BPM display will brighten to indicate confidence in the current BPM display value and the counter can be used to visually confirm accuracy. Please note the iPhone cannot sample audio from the iPod music library so this application will work with external sound sources only.
These three visualization modules are included in version 1.0 and will be expanded in the future:
- BeatDetektor scanner view with counter and oscilloscope
- Spectrum analyser with oscilloscope
- Wave pool with bass kick wave and interactive tap and drag The scanner is displayed by default.
To access the spectrum analyser swipe to the left or to access the wave pool swipe to the right. Configuration and internal details can be accessed by swiping up and down from the scanner view. BeatDetektor utilizes a new algorithm designed by myself to detect and visualize the BPM of any steady beat in the vicinity. It deals well with low volumes and interference from other sounds but a clearly audible rhythm is preferred. By default it will be tuned for 90-179 BPM however three BPM minimum/maximum ranges are available for selection: 48-95 BPM, 90-179 BPM and 150-299 BPM If a detection appears too fast (double time) you can tune it down, if it appears too slow (half time) you can tune it up. Five color schemes are included in v1.0 and more will be added in the future. Color schemes can be cycled by double-tapping the screen: - Terminal (Default) - Silver - Fire - Pastel - Classic VU Thanks for your interest and I hope you'll enjoy using BeatDetektor as much as I did developing it.
